Google Chrome and SSL - what this means for you

2 February 2017, 10:43

As of 31st January 2017, Google Chrome has changed the way it displays unsecure websites, websites without SSL.

What is SSL?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is the security technology that allows the connection between your Web Browser (Firefox, Chrome,  Internet Explorer, Edge, Safari, etc.), and a Web Server (where websites are stored) to be encrypted.

In order for a Web Server to offer a SSL connection, they must apply for a SSL Certificate and give a number of details about both the website and the business hosted on the Web Server. This helps with the establishing the authenticity of websites.

Google Chrome Changes

As of the recent Google Chrome update to v56, Chrome will be showing websites without a SSL Certificate as insecure.

Below are the descriptions outlined by Google for each type of connection. These icons will be displayed at the top of your browser to the left of the website address you are currently on.

secure

The information you send to the site will be private.

Even if you see this icon, always be careful when sharing private information. Look at the address bar to make sure you're on the site you want to visit.

info

The site isn't using a private connection. Someone might be able to see the information you send through this site. We suggest that you don't enter sensitive details, like passwords or credit cards.

On some sites, you can visit the private version of the page:

  1. Select the address bar.
  2. Delete http://, and enter https:// instead.

If that doesn't work, contact the site owner to ask that they secure the site and your data with HTTPS.

not-secure

We suggest you don't enter any private or personal information on this page. If possible, don't use the site.

Not secure: Proceed with caution. Something is severely wrong with the privacy of this site’s connection. Someone might be able to see the information you send through this site.

dangerous

We suggest you don't enter any private or personal information on this page. If possible, don't use the site.

Dangerous: Avoid this site. If you see a full-page red warning screen, the site has been flagged as unsafe by Safe Browsing. Using the site will likely put your private information at risk.
